A very suggestive and interest title,
Pedrito Verdecie, luz y memoria, (Pedrito Verdecie Light and
Memory) by Margarita Garcia [*] can be found at the
bookstores of Las Tunas city.
To gather in a volume the chore and transcendency of Pedro
Verdecie was an arduous task, result of extensive research
that the author made to write her Master's degree in
Community Cultural Development.
Published in 2011 by Sanlope Publishing House, Pedrito
Verdecie luz y memoria includes key aspects of the history
of this figure, the best exponent of the intelligentsia in
Las Tunas.
Pedro was born in a poor family and soon needs to work to
help his family. However, his eagerness to study and read
tirelessly prevails in his adverse environment.
In 1946 he became Doctor in Laws at the University of
Havana. By then he is linked to the revolutionary struggle
and as member of the Orthodox Party he met the leader
Eduardo Chibas, who used to visit Las Tunas frequency.
During that time he met Fidel Castro. They were traveling in
the car of Chibas, next to the man who became later the
leader of the Cuban Revolution, and from that experience
Pedrito said:
"We didn't exchange words. His speech at the Assembly was
sufficient to appreciate his communicative skills, nobody
would have thought that he would be what he is at present
and I had the honor of being in the Orthodox Party, along
with him. "(Garcia Margarita, p.17)
Verdecie was one of those men who felt passion for the
history of Cuba in general and in particular for Las Tunas.
Reason why, he wrote about his heroes and explored their
participation in the wars for the independence our country.
Through various actions he highlighted the figure of Jose
Marti and wrote about his different facets. Moreover, he was
member of the Jose Marti Cultural Society, work he
materialized in the media, libraries, archives and at his
Masonic Lodge, where he was known as a historian, for the
rescue of important anniversaries. (P. 49)
About Pedrito, Margarita says:
Pedro Osmundo Verdecie Perez stands among men who have
highlighted culture in Las Tunas and to frame him in a
specific activity of the same, it would not do justice to
who from the early fifties appeared in the Honor Hall of the
annual magazine Tunas de Ayer y de Hoy, as social agent of
multiple activity. (P.48)
[*] Margarita Garcia (Guantanamo,

Master in Community Cultural Development, Assistant
Professor of the Faculty of Humanities at the University
Vladimir Ilich Lenin of Las Tunas, published the book
Brigida Zaldivar: decision y estirpe, at Sanlope Publishing
House, 2001. Her works appear in newspapers of this
province.
