People: Oil Spill Needs Miracle

Washington.- Some U.S. citizens
were expecting a miracle on
Wednesday to contain the growing
disaster of the Gulf of Mexico
oil spill, the country´s worst
environmental catastrophe ever.
On Tuesday, a
group of 50 people called
"Prayer at the Pump" sang gospel
music in front of the White
House to protest the
mismanagement of the
environmental crisis and its
economic consequences for the
U.S. people.
After concluding
his two-day visit to the
affected zone on Tuesday,
President Barack
Obama admitted that the
population is frightened and
angry because of the oil spill.
Fifty-eight days
after the spill began, the US
Congress has reports confirming
that at least five oil companies
operating deep-water wells show
problems identical to those of
British Petroleum (BP).
BP, which is on
the ropes, announced Tuesday
that it will send another team
to collect the crude being
spilled into the Gulf by the
Deepwater Horizon rig.
On Monday, Obama appointed
Michael Bromwich as new head of
the Minerals Management Service
(MMS)agency, which monitors the
exploitation and trade of oil.
Bromwich is a former assistant
US attorney and Justice
Department inspector general.
Some weeks ago,
Obama said corruption existed
within the MMS regarding the
issuing of exploration and
exploitation permits.
In his first
speech on the oil spill,
broadcast from the Oval Office
on Tuesday night, Obama talked
about aspects of the recovery
plan for the zone, the
appointment of a body to oversee
work in the affected area, and
BP's creation of a compensation
fund for those affected. (Latin
