Las Tunas.-
With the desire of helping the alimentary security of Cuba, in front of

the growing price of the groceries in the world market, the world economic crisis and the US blockade against their people, the farmers of Las Tunas province increase the breeding of small farm animals.

For such a purpose they already have 145, 000 rams, 80, 000 goats and considerable quantity of rabbits and other species, although they are still far from being able to satisfy the population’s necessities.

State producers, peasants, members of cooperatives and even city-dwellers, are part of a movement to boost the development of that cattle raising type on economic and ecologically sustainable bases.

On that concept, the breeders guarantee the feeding and the health of their animals starting from resources that are plentiful or can be fomented in the town, and in such a matter they have the advice of the Experimental Station of Grasses and Forage, of the University Center Vladimir Ilich Lenin and of diverse institutions.

Francisco Santos Bedia, director of the National Company of Small Farm Animals, attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, said recently in this city, capital of Las Tunas, 690 kilometers to the east of Havana, that in 2009 the meat sales of the mentioned species to the tourist sector and other ministries have saved Cuba more than 300, 000 dollars, while the population has acquired a superior figure to the 370 tons of the nutritious food.
