Pork Production Record in Las Tunas This Year

Las Tunas.- The breeders of pigs in Las Tunas province expect to conclude the current year with the sale of |
5, 267 tons of pork, figure that would surpass in more than 26 percent the production reached in 2008 and it would be a record for a period of 12 months in the territory, located 690 kilometers to the east of Havana.
Although the amount doesn’t satisfy the necessities of the population in Las Tunas, this production could mark a new starting point, even amid strong restrictions, due to the high prices of the provisions in the world market, and after the serious damages caused by the hurricanes Ike and Paloma last September, valued in two millions 300 thousand pesos (national currency).
Specialist Fernando Gomez, director of the Swinish Company in the territory, told Tiempo21 that the entity has 707 workers and more than 20 technologists in charge of the animal production on the base of diverse cultivations and other local resources.
In addition, there are 600 independent and collective producers who have subscribed agreements with the State for the development of sows and other 75 people fatten pigs up, a program that according to Gomez will substitute imports in Cuba.
The swinish sector in Las Tunas will open next year a new unit in the municipality of Manati, 40 kilometers to the northwest of this provincial capital, and it will boost the multiplication of sires and sows.
Recently Las Tunas organized a national encounter of promoters linked to the breeding of pigs, event in which multiple experiences were exchanged about the appropriate use of the technologies to feed the pigs with the existent resources in each region.
