Las Tunas. - Over one
million pesos, national
money, was granted by
the Cuban State to Las
Tunas province during
last year in views to
boosting the scientific
investigations and the
technological
innovation, which
favored especially the
food production, as it
was known amid the
activities guided to
greet the Cuban Science
Day in the territory,
690 kilometers to the
east of Havana.
The use of the
scientific potential,
created by the
Revolution in this
eastern province, was
one of the decisive
factors in the quick
recovery of the serious
damages caused to the
agricultural sector by
the scourge of two
powerful hurricanes, in
September and November
in 2008.
Thanks to the
application of the
science and the
technique, few weeks
after the passage both
natural disasters, the
eight municipalities of
the province could
harvest vegetables and
roots, which together
with the supply of
products from other
areas of the country
attenuated the lack of
foods considerably.
Also in the cattle
raising the search and
introduction of
scientific-technical
achievements influenced
a lot, practice that is
strengthening even more
with the purpose of
guaranteeing the feeding
to the animals and to
substitute considerable
imports.
Sectors such as
education, sport,
environment and public
health were also object
of an intense chore in
the field of the
investigations and the
technological
innovation, which
rebounded, for example
in that Las Tunas
reached an infant
mortality rate of 3.6
deaths per each thousand
born alive, its second
lowest (2.7 in 2008).
Cuba celebrates on
January 15 the Science
Day because on that date
in 1960, during the
celebration of the 20
anniversary of the
Society of Spelunking of
Cuba, the historical
leader of the Revolution
Fidel Castro Ruz
predicted: "The future
of our Homeland has to
be necessarily a future
of science men, of
intellectual men.”
This Friday Las Tunas
welcomes that date with
a potential of
scientists that includes
81 doctors in different
fields, more than 1, 400
masters, and four
university centers with
branches in each one of
its eight
municipalities.
Pie def: The application
of scientific-technical
advances propitiated the
quick recovery of the
agriculture, strongly
damaged in 2008 by two
powerful hurricanes.
