Las Tunas.– If
the descendants of
Spaniards, born in the
Americas, were
denominated Creole,
would be valid to assert
that the farmers of the
north of Las Tunas
province are producing
Creole or Cuban
chickpea.
The cultivation of that
leguminous plant is very
common there, mainly in
the municipality of
Jesus Menendez, the most
eastern in Las Tunas,
bordering with Holguin
province and located
about 750 kilometers to
the east of Havana.
That region has 536
hectares of sowed
chickpea, which should
produce not less than
740 tons that mean more
than 700, 000 dollars,
without counting the
transportation expenses
and the overcharges
imposed to Cuba by the
US blockade.
Beyond the money, the

world.

a favorite dish in the

|
cultivation of
that plant is
part of
a program guided
to
diversify the
diet of the
Cuban people and
although the
chickpea is not
as nutritious as
other seeds of
its type, it has
high value of
proteins and
vitamins.
This leguminous
is cultivated
since immemorial
times in Africa,
Asia and Europe,
extended then to
all the
continents, very
useful also to
combat hepatic
diseases, among
others. Its
biggest
producer, in the
triennium
2007-2009, was
India, with a
million 100, 000
tons, followed
by Turkey (675,
000 tons) and
Mexico (389, 000
tons).
The cultivation
of the chickpea
flourished in
the northern
municipality of
Jesus Menendez,
some 60
kilometers of
this city,
approximately
one decade ago,
boosted by the
farmers Reinol
Fernandez and
Gildardo Salivar,
belonging to the
Cooperative
Oscar Lucero and
they still stay
as the biggest
producers.
Some 30
productive
organizations of
that region are
linked to the
program, which
also includes
other two
municipalities
of the north of
the territory:
Puerto Padre and
Manati,
economically
supported by
Turkey, country
with a vast
tradition in the
sowing and the
crop of the
mentioned food.
The production
of chickpeas in
Cuba is not only
popular in Las
Tunas, but also
in Holguin,
Guantanamo,
Sancti Spiritus,
Havana and Pinar
del Rio, and in
a short period
of time it
should cover the
rest of the
Archipelago.
