Las Tunas Children's Hospital
By Luis Manuel Quesada Kindelán
Translated by Ernesto Gutiérrez Pino
One of the health centers that has a big importance for
the inhabitants of Las Tunas is the children's hospital Mártires de las
Tunas whose workers commemorated the twentieth anniversary of its
foundation.
This pediatric institution began to offer services to
children soon after the inauguration of the General Hospital Doctor
Ernesto Che Guevara, in l980 and from then on several enlargement works
were carried out there, among them the area for the policlinic and the
room for the intensive cares.
The oldest part in this facility, used before as general
hospital, has its history. That health facility began to be built some
years before the triumph of the Revolution, but in stead of solving the
population's necessity, it was dedicated to serve as political
propaganda for the government of Fulgencio Batista.
Also, those kinds of constructions always represented
juicy revenues for the politicians who stole part of the assigned budget
and they even put in risk the constructive quality.
The hospital of Las Tunas was not an exception and when
the Revolution triumphed in l959 had to continue the work, but it was
necessary to demolish a roof that was about to fall.
In few months the constructors finished the building for
the satisfaction of the population and this way the new hospital began
their activities.
At this moment the Pediatric Hospital Mártires de Las
Tunas is an entire symbol for the city and the province, because it was
the first health institution in this territory and due to its personnel
offer the best assistance to the children.
