Abusive
Treatment to Gerardo Hernandez in U.S.
prison
July 31, 2010, 6:00 pm
Las Tunas, (Main Writing Tiempo21) .-
Cuban Parliament President, Ricardo
Alarcon de Quesada, said that this
legislative body will protest before the
international community against the
mistreatment to Gerardo Hernandez, one
of the Cubans Five, antiterrorist
prisoner in U.S jails since 1998.
Alarcon said that lawyer for the defense
team of the Five, Leonard Weinglass,
traveled to California, where Gerardo is
confined to claim his right to see and
meet with his client, discuss his
situation and prepare process of habeas
corpus, extraordinary resource
prescribed by law for closed cases like
this the U.S. Supreme Court refused to
review it.
Granma online newspaper highlights that
this process cannot be carried out
because of the isolation of Gerardo and
that recently his sister Elizabeth, was
able to converse with him through a
double glass that separated the two
cabins, a sample that he is subjected to
cruel torture.
Alarcon said that Gerardo is again in a
punishment cell (the hole) in company of
another prisoner and subjected to
temperatures over 35 degrees, with
little ventilation.
The top legislator noted that Gerardo
suffers from some ailments, including
blood pressure problems, for which he
had been asking for medical examination
since April. He was finally seen by a
physician on July 20 and diagnosed
problems requiring treatment. Apparently,
the ailment is caused by a bacterium
that, according to the physician, is
circulating among inmates, some of whom
have become seriously ill.
Alarcon said that the Cuban Parliament
will begin its plenary session on Sunday
with an official declaration condemning
the mistreatment of Gerardo Hernandez,
who —along with Antonio Guerrero,
Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino and
Rene Gonzalez— was arrested in September
1998 and given excessive sentences for
monitoring the activities of extremist
anti-Cuba groups in South Florida that
were planning and carrying out terrorist
attacks against Cuba.
