Their Society

Panamanian women debate today on
a bigger participation in the
political life, better wages and
overwhelming actions against the
violence at home, as main
problems inside their society.
When the world commemorates
today the Woman's International
Day, the Panamanians see as an
illusion the rules about
equality of gender that
establish a 30 percent of the
feminine participation in the
candidacies to electoral
positions, since the results of
the last elections reflect only
a 10 percent of 883 women
postulated to diverse positions.
According to a wire from Prensa
Latina news agency in the
National Assembly, they only
obtained six of the 71 seats to
deputies.
A
research by the University of
Panama revealed that in the
cases of women and men with same
academic level, the first ones
receive inferior wages until 28
percent and as regards
employment, the unemployment
rate among the women was 8,9
percent in the 2009, while for
the men it was 5.1.
Together with it, the
institution noticed on the
phenomenon of the violence at
home, because this year 19 women
died as result of these acts,
while last year 80 women lost
the life for similar cause, in
contrast with 42 victims in
2008, which requires of
overwhelming actions to stop
that tendency.
