Las
Tunas .-
The
Torula
Yeast
Factory,
located
in the
municipality
of
Puerto
Padre,
52
kilometer
to the
north of
this
city and
more
than 740
east of
Havana,
which
improves
animal
feed,
fertilizes
the
fields
with
high
quality
natural
fertilizers
and
protects
the
environment,
went
back
into
production
thanks
to the
diligence
and
intelligence
of its
employees.
Bordering
the
Antonio
Guiteras
sugar
mill,
the
largest
sugar
producer
in Cuba,
the
facility
was so
severely
damaged
by
Hurricane
Ike in
September
|

Torula
Yeast
Factory
adjacent
to the
Antonio
Guiteras
sugar
mill
supplies
to
customers
of Las
Tunas
province
and
other
parts of
Cuba.

Torula
is an
excellent
food,
especially
for pigs
and
calves. |
|
2008
that the
national
leadership
and the
specialists
of the
Sugar
Ministry
did not
conceive
the
possibility
of
recovering
it at
this
date,
but in a
much
longer
term.
Fortunately,
that was
not the
view
shared
by the
management
and the
workers,
who
after
the
passage
of the
natural
disaster
began
the
repair,
which
concluded
successfully.
Without
losing
time and
although
until
now part
of the
plant
has not
roof yet
the
workers
have
produced
124
tonnes
of yeast
in the
first
month,
higher
than
expected.
Torula
yeast,
scientifically
known as
Candida
utilis,
can be
extracted
from
various
organic
materials,
and in
the case
of
Puerto
Padre,
in order
to save
sugar-cane
syrup,
is
derived
from the
vinasse
or waste
liquid
from the
manufacture
of
alcohol.
Whether
in cream
or dry
base,
the
torula
contains
up to 38
percent
of
protein,
which
makes it
an
excellent
food for
pigs,
cattle
and
other
species,
and is a
product
that can
replace
expensive
imports.
Studies
carried
out in
the
neighboring
Granma
province
and
other
regions
of Cuba
show
that
some
remaining
water in
the
production
of yeast
is a
source
of
pollution
if they
are
discharged
into the
environment,
but they
are high
in
potassium,
phosphorus,
nitrogen,
magnesium,
calcium
and
other
elements,
together
with its
low
acidity,
make
them
fertilizers
able to
duplicate
widely
the
sugar
cane
yields.
