5, 000
hectares
of tree
will be
planted
by
forestry
workers
in Las
Tunas
eastern
province
this
year to
counteract
the
extensive
deforestation
in the
territory,
with
just
14.35
percent
of its
surface
covered
by
forests.
Besides
the
planting
they
will
also
give
cultural
care to
some 400
hectares
of
natural
regeneration,
aims
that
will
influence
on the
increase
of
precipitation,
since
Las
Tunas
has
lowest
average
rainfall
in Cuba,
with
little
more
than one
thousand
millimeters
per
year.
According
to a
wire
from the
Cuban
News
Agency,
the
province
works to
plant
annually
4, 500
hectares
of
forest
in a
medium
term,
ending
in 2015
to 18.4
percent
of its
total
area
covered
by
trees,
with a
priority
on
precious
species
such as
mahogany,
cedar,
baria,
majagua
and
others
widely
used.
The
effort
of the
forestry
workers
in Las
Tunas is
part of
the one
carried
out in
all Cuba
to raise
the
rates of
forest,
which is
not only
beneficial
for the
economy
but also
to
preserve
the
ecosystem.
The
effort
has led
to
reverse
the
situation
the
nation
had
before
the
triumph
of the
Revolution
in 1959,
when the
country
had only
14
percent
of its
surface
covered
by the
forests,
but at
present
Cuba has
more
than 25
percent
and
expects
to reach
about 30
in 2015.
