Las Tunas. Yamilin was born with refraction problems that limited her normal vision. Her parents were taking her to Havana as outpatient for

several times before the surgery, which in her case was resolved with contact lenses.

However, Osnelis and Yordan with myopia exceeding five degrees, began treatment in just two weeks ago at Ernesto Guevara Provincial Hospital in this city and were operated on, thanks to a modern ophthalmology center inaugurated with some of its nine specialties in October 2008.

Both patients agree that their glasses were almost part of them, but they had to take them off and it is better to see clear with their own eyes.

Dr. Vivian Cespedes Galiano and the nurse, Maria Santiesteban Gomez revealed that the surgery is highly selective, rapid and effective.

Did I hear eximer laser?

Yes, it is a refractive surgery that uses a type of laser by means of a combination of argon and fluoride. We receive training for this in Havana and from November 2009 we are providing services.

What characteristics should the patients have for this procedure?

They must be patients with refractive disorders with myopia up to eighth degree, not more, with a long-sightedness up to fourth degree and astigmatism up to three, that’s why patients who come to the consultation must be over 21 years, should not be sick of collagen and not take steroids permanently. "

What is their vision after they are operated on?

In the first twenty-four hours, the patient sees a little blurry, but the next day he is overjoyed because he can see things from a long distance.
What is the nurse’s work in this top technology service?

This is a team work in function of giving everything for the patient's success, which means to achieve that he doesn't need to wear his glasses again.

Persuasion is also very important for the success, because after the surgery the patient should not touch his eyes. He must not blink strong, lower his head immediately and make physical effort.
